November 11th, 2011STARS Volleyball Alumni Win at Nationals
August 11th, 2011Congratulations to Selkirk STARS alumni Kier Fey and Ashtyn Hodges, players on the Shock Club in Winnipeg, winners of the 2011 U14 Volleyball Canada Nationals. Shock went 18 straight matches without a loss on their way to winning the championship tournament held in Saskatoon in May. Shock also won the Manitoba Provincials with 43 teams in their age group in the province.
Kier and Ashtyn both began playing volleyball with STARS in Selkirk when they were just in grade 2. For over four years, both Kier and Ashtyn never missed a session of STARS playing fall and spring sessions as well as mini-camps to develop their skills. Both players made the Selkirk Royals Club Bantam team when they were only in grade 6.
“Kier and Ashtyn never missed a session of STARS. Always the first ones there and the last to leave, both girls just loved the sport right from their first session” said Bob Baker, who coached STARS Volleyball in Selkirk during those years. Baker continued “Their enthusiasm for the sport was contagious. Always smiling, always encouraging their teammates, always communicating on the court, and most importantly, always having fun.”
Volleyball is a “family affair” for both families. Both girls have “big brothers” who started playing with STARS and who have also enjoyed considerable success as volleyball players. Karl Fey, Tristan Hodges, and Josh Hodges went on from STARS to play for the Selkirk Royals Club and their junior and senior high teams in Selkirk. Sherryl Fey, Kier’s Mother, co-coached with Bob Baker in the Selkirk program.
